In Norse mythology, Sigyn married Loki and bore two sons by him. They were slain (one forced to kill the other) and the intestines were used to bind Loki.
Sigyn holds a chalice above Loki’s head in this image, to catch the burning poison that drips from the snake slithering above Loki’s head. She is aggrieved but devoted to her husband even as he is bound by defeat. Her honor is tied to her endurance and long-suffering love. Oh, the light-hearted Norse myths.
